A man who rethought movement

Who is Joseph Pilates

Who was actually the person behind the method? Joseph Hubertus Pilates was more than just a trainer. He was a visionary, inventor, pioneer and far ahead of his time. More than 100 years ago, he completely rethought movement: as a combination of power, control and awareness.

The roots of a method

Joseph Pilates was born in Germany in 1883. Even as a child, he was fascinated by the human body. He did not want to let his own health problems slow him down. He worked out tirelessly, combining gymnastics, yoga, boxing and dance and developed a holistic concept that combines body and mind.

First devices, first vision

During World War I, Pilates began experimenting with hospital beds. This is how the predecessor of the reformer was created. One of the central devices that we still use in the studio today. His idea: to help people move gently and in a controlled manner despite limitations, build up strength and improve their posture.

Pilates today: our interpretation

More than 100 years later, Pilates is more relevant than ever. With Pilates Zurich Let's take up Joseph's approach and develop it further. We combine its principles with modern training methods and innovative tools such as Konnector®. This is how we create sessions that challenge without overwhelming. For beginners and experienced Pilates fans alike.

More than training: a way of life

For us, Pilates is not just movement. It is mindfulness, connection, a conscious moment for yourself. That is exactly what Joseph Pilates meant when he said:

“Physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness. ”
