Functional Training & Pilates

Not just a trend

Strong in everyday life, balanced in body awareness. Everyone is talking about functional training today; it has been part of our thinking for a long time. Because anyone who knows Pilates knows: Here too, you train your body functionally, only more consciously and often more gently.

What does functional training actually mean?

Functional training means: You train movements, not isolated muscles. Your entire body works as a team, much like an orchestra. Instead of just tuning one instrument, the result is an interplay that brings strength, stability and balance to everyday life.

This type of exercise was developed in the 90s by a physiotherapist Gary Gray popularized. His idea: All muscles and joints work together, a kinetic chain. Squats, lunges, support and pull movements, often using only your own body weight. This not only strengthens muscles, but also your body awareness and mobility.

And what does that have to do with Pilates?

Very much! Joseph Pilates encouraged people to see their entire body as a unit over 100 years ago. Deep core muscles, hips, shoulder stability. It is precisely these areas that also play a key role in functional training.

You could almost say: Pilates is functional training, only with an even greater focus on mindfulness, precision, and breathing. You train in a controlled, conscious and sustainable way instead of simply working yourself out.

Think functionally, train in a variety of ways

Whether you are doing Matwork, Reformer or TRX® suspension training with us. Many of our course formats include elements from functional training. With tools such as TRX®, you can add instability, strengthen your deep muscles and improve your body tone.

BODYART® is also based on functional movements. This is where dynamic flows meet stopping positions. Inspired by yoga, Pilates and TCM. The result: holistic training that strengthens, mobilizes and centers you.

Who is it for?

For everyone who wants to train their body the way it is built: as a unit. For everyone who wants to feel powerful, flexible and stable in everyday life. And for anyone who wants to feel how good functional movement feels.

Come by, try it out and discover what functional training at Pilates Zurich means for you.
